8 reasons we should all switch to biodegradable wipes today

August 16, 2018

Wet wipes – what would we do without them? From nappy changing to cleaning messy faces, mopping up spills to cleaning sticky fingers, wet wipes are the go-to essential for parents everywhere.

But, as has recently been brought to light in the media, plastic-containing wet wipes are not kind to the environment, so now is the perfect time to see what alternative options are available. If you need all the convenience of disposable wipes without the guilt and negative impact on the planet, why not switch to a plastic-free, eco-friendly, biodegradable wipe instead?

Aqua Wipes are the new, fully biodegradable wipes, created to be kind to the environment AND baby’s skin.

These revolutionary wipes do not use plastic-based materials and contain more than 99% purified water with an organic aloe vera extract formulation. Used by special-care baby units, neonatal and maternity units in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), Aqua Wipes are produced with the environment in mind, while caring for even the most delicate skin.

If you’re still not convinced, here are our top eight reasons why biodegradable wipes are the answer for busy families:
  1. Do your bit for the environment – most wet wipes contain plastic, so changing to a biodegradable version will help to reduce the amount of plastic pollution that we collectively send into the world’s oceans.
  2. The vast majority of baby wipes on the market are not biodegradable because the fabrics used to make the wipe contain plastic. It’s well documented that these fabrics can take many, many years to degrade. According to Water UK1, the trade body representing the main water and sewerage companies in the country, wet wipes are not only responsible for a staggering 93% of blockages in UK sewers, they are also the primary component of the infamous giant obstacles known as ‘fatbergs’.
  3. Every wipe counts. It only takes a few wet wipes to clog up a drain. Plus, if they come into contact with disposed fats and oils, ‘fatbergs” are created and can harbour in public sewers –even becoming as big as a bus.
  4. Fabrics containing plastic are more commonly used as they are cheaper to manufacture but are much more damaging to the environment. When incorrectly flushed away, wet wipes that contain plastic actually break down into microplastics, which can be ingested by marine life, with fatal consequences.
  5. Wet wipe pollution is reportedly “changing the shape of our river beds”, with more than 5,000 (or enough to cover two football pitches) found next to the River Thames, London, earlier this year, according to environmental agency Thames21.
  6. Biodegradable wipes such as Aqua Wipes are made from natural materials, so are less likely to irritate the skin too! Aqua Wipes are made from 100% viscose, which is manufactured from cellulose – a natural material
  7. Because Aqua Wipes are made from 100% viscose they are also compostable!
  8. And finally… The Government is threatening a widespread ban on wet wipes containing plastics, so moving to biodegradable plastic-free wipes has never been so current. Get ahead of the game and switch now!
