1. Italy: La Vigilia, A Night of Feasting and Tradition

In Italy, Christmas Eve is known as La Vigilia. It is a night of religious observance, family reunions, and culinary delights. The centrepiece of the evening is the Feast of the Seven Fishes. This is a traditional meal comprising seven different seafood dishes, symbolising the seven days of creation. 2. Germany: Heiligabend, A Night of Candles, Carols, and Gifts

In Germany, Christmas Eve, or Heiligabend, is a time for ‘gemütlichkeit’. This is the German word for warmth, cosiness, and festivity. Family gather around the Christmas tree, singing carols and enjoying a traditional meal of ham, potatoes, and pickled vegetables. The streets are adorned with festive decorations, including the iconic Yule Goat. This is a large straw figure representing the spirit of the season. At home smaller Yule Goats decorate the house.

5. Spain: Nochebuena, A Night of Family Reunions and Festive Celebrations

In Spain, Christmas Eve, known as ‘Nochebuena’. It is a time for family reunions and festive celebrations. Families gather for a traditional meal, often featuring turkey, lamb, or seafood, accompanied by local delicacies and sweet treats. After dinner, children eagerly open one present. This tradition precedes the main gift exchange on Christmas Day. The evening concludes with midnight mass, a solemn and spiritual celebration.
