#CLEANTOK Cleaning hacks

January 19, 2023

Since the kitchen uses the most energy in our homes, we have been told to turn off unused appliances and only boil what we need in the kettle. Did you know that some simple cleaning hacks can also help you save money on your bills?

Cleaning experts from End of Tenancy Cleaning London have shared their best tips for cleaning common kitchen items and looked at data from cleaning videos on Tiktok, where the “CleanTok” trend has had a massive 55 billion views. This can help you have a cleaner and more energy-efficient kitchen.

How to clean an Air Fryer

how to clean your air fryer 76.3 million people have watched the Tik Tok video with the hashtag #airfryercleaning.

Soap and a sponge cost £0.58

Last year, as energy costs went up, the number of Air Fryers sold went up by 3000%. Even though cooking in an air fryer saves energy, if you don’t clean it, it may take longer to heat up and use more energy.

In response, End of Tenancy Cleaning spokeswoman Ivan Ivanov gave these top tips on how to clean your air fryers:

“It is important to clean your air fryer after every use to keep it energy efficient, high-performing and safe. If left uncleaned, grime and wasted food can become baked onto the tray, becoming more and more stuck over time.

Using a soft sponge and some standard household soap, remove the tray from the air fryer (once cooled) and use your finger to gently scrub all available areas. If your finger is too large, or the mess is a bit too stuck on, use an old toothbrush instead! Whatever works best for you, provided you’re cleaning effectively but not pushing so hard as to remove any of the heat-proof coating on the inside of the airfryer tray.”

How to clean a kettle

The price of white vinegar is £0.29

The Internet has taught us a lot of ways to save energy with kettles, like only boiling as much water as we need. Ivan Ivanov of End of Tenancy Cleaning said that keeping kettles clean is another way to save money on energy costs. But 11% of Brits have never cleaned their kettle, according to a survey. Ivan said the following in response:

“If your kettle is full of limescale, you will need to use more energy to boil the same amount of water! You should be descaling your kettle every two months or less, especially if you are using hard water from your tap. Simply fill your kettle with half white vinegar and half water, then boil it. After pouring it out, repeat this step. You can also soak it overnight and wait for the limescale to come off. If you don’t have white vinegar, you can also use baking soda or even lemon juice instead.”

How to clean your oven

Price: £2.00 – Cleaner for the oven

Some people might think it’s hard to clean our oven because of all the burned food, grime, and crumbs. Still, it’s important to do this. A clean oven will not only keep your kitchen safer, but it will also spread heat better, which will use less energy.

End of Tenancy Cleaning’s Ivan Ivanov has given some simple tips on how to clean your oven:

“If you don’t have an oven cleaner to hand, you can simply try cleaning it with your vacuum! This will get rid of any leftover charcoaled bits and crumbs before scrubbing the dirt away. Cleaning the racks in the bath will allow you more space than awkwardly in the sink, however, be sure to use a bathtub hair catcher as otherwise large chunks of grime can clog up your drains.”

How to clean your fridge

cleaning fridge tik tok Tiktok #cleaningfridges has 92,500,000 views.

Cost: £1.60 – Baking soda

Since fridges and freezers need to be on all the time, it’s not surprising that they use the most electricity out of all the kitchen appliances. But this also means that if you clean it well, you could save a lot on your energy and maintenance bills. Ivan from End of Lease Cleaning told us some easy ways to clean our refrigerators:

“Taking 15 minutes and cleaning your fridge’s coil will make a big difference to energy efficiency because too much dust there would require your fridge to work harder to get to food-safe temperature, without releasing the heat properly. To do this, remove the panel at the back and use a vacuum to get rid of all the dust. To clean the interior of your fridge, we recommend simply using baking soda or white vinegar and warm water. Apply a soft cloth to rub the interior and rinse it afterwards.

How to clean your kitchen sink

Cleaning kitchen sink tik tok Tiktok views for the hashtag #kitchensinkcleaning: 17.6 million

Price: £2.81 for soap, a cloth, and a drain cleaner.

Even though more and more people are buying dishwashers, most people still use the sink to wash their hands, vegetables, dishes, and more. It’s important to take care of your faucets and drains so that warm water comes out more quickly and your kitchen doesn’t smell. End of Lease Cleaning’s Ivan suggested:

“Because most household taps are metal, corrosion through extended usage can occur. Use warm soapy water and a soft microfibre cloth instead of a scouring pad as this will rub off more metal and cause your tap to rust. Gently wash the grime from the tap using the soft cloth, run the tap, and you should notice results within seconds.

“To clean drains, put a dishwasher tablet over the top of the plug and run boiling water so it dissolves. This should unblock some of the grime and leave it smelling fresh. If it doesn’t work for your situation, try using a store-bought drain unblocker to get rid of any excess grime.”

So there you have it: low-cost ways to keep your house clean while also saving money on your energy bills!
