Dummies and Breastfeeding: A Guide for Parents

Wondering whether to introduce a dummy to your breastfeeding baby? It’s a common dilemma for new parents. Lots of parents wonder whether they should give a dummy to their baby, but for breastfeeding Mums this adds another dimension. While some worry about potential interference with breastfeeding, dummies can offer several benefits for both baby and parent.

Why Offer a Dummy?

Babies have a strong natural sucking reflex. This instinctual need can be soothed through breastfeeding, but also by sucking on a dummy, thumb, or other objects.

  • Soothing and Comfort: Dummies can effectively soothe a crying baby, helping them relax and fall asleep more easily.
  • Reduced Stress: They can help lower a baby’s heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels.
  • Pain Relief: Dummies can provide some relief from pain, such as during vaccinations or teething.
  • SIDS Reduction: Studies have shown that pacifier use during sleep may slightly reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

When to Introduce a Dummy

The American Academy of Paediatrics previously recommended waiting until breastfeeding is well-established (around 3-4 weeks). However, recent research suggests that introducing a dummy earlier may not significantly impact breastfeeding success in healthy, term infants.

  • Early Introduction: Some studies indicate that restricting dummy access in the hospital can actually decrease exclusive breastfeeding rates.

Choosing the Right Dummy

  • BIBS Dummies: BIBS dummies are a popular choice for breastfeeding mothers. Their round nipple closely resembles the shape of the mother’s breast, promoting natural sucking patterns and minimising nipple confusion.
  • Consider Nipple Shape:
    • Round Nipples: Encourage proper tongue movement, similar to breastfeeding.
    • Symmetrical Nipples: Can be beneficial for babies who have difficulty holding a round dummy in their mouths.
    • Anatomical Nipples: Offer a balance between round and symmetrical, with a curved shape that fits naturally while still promoting tongue movement.
  • Consider Material of Teat:
  • Safety First: Always choose dummies made from high-quality, BPA-free materials. Ensure they are easy to clean and sterilise.

Dummy Dos and Don’ts

  • Do:
    • Use dummies for comfort and soothing.
    • Choose dummies with a valve to allow for natural nipple formation.
    • Sterilise dummies frequently.
    • Replace dummies every 4-6 weeks or at the first sign of damage.
  • Don’t:
    • Use dummies to replace feeding your baby.
    • Dip dummies in sugar or honey.
    • Leave dummies in direct sunlight.
    • Tie dummies to strings or cords.
    • Use dummies after the age of 3.

A Word from Kirsten Lise Andersen

Kirsten Lise Andersen, a registered nurse and health visitor with 15 years of experience, emphasises the importance of observing your baby’s individual preferences. “Babies have different sucking techniques and mouth anatomies,” she explains. “While the round nipple can be beneficial for breastfeeding, it’s crucial to find the dummy shape that best suits your baby’s needs.”
