Bringing a newborn into your life is an incredible experience, and every moment with your little bundle of joy feels like a treasured memory in the making. One beautiful way to immortalise these early moments is through a newborn photoshoot. While many people opt for professional photographers, doing a newborn photoshoot at home can be an equally rewarding and intimate experience. Plus, it allows you to capture those candid, heartfelt moments that happen in the comfort of your own space.
Once you start taking photos of your newborn, you won’t want to stop. Babies change on an almost daily basis and you can never turn back the clock. We love photo-journaling and having a physical record of these memories is not just fun to do, it is great for emotional and mental well-being. Sitting down with your child in years to come and looking back at all the memories you created is something that social media just won’t give you.
Why not try Mosaic Journal, it is easy to use, cost-effective and is an amazing keepsake. Simply upload a picture everyday to the easy-to-use, Mosaic Journal app, then sit back and await the prints to be delivered through your door! They even have a stunning album with 365 spaces to place your memories in making every day unforgettable. Check it out here.
Timing is Key
The ideal time for a newborn photoshoot is during the first two weeks of your baby’s life, when they’re still very sleepy and easy to pose. However, don’t stress if you missed this window; you can still capture precious moments at any age.
Find Natural Light
Natural light is your best friend for photography. Choose a room in your home that has plenty of soft, diffused sunlight streaming in. Large windows or a spot near a glass door work perfectly. You could do your shoot outside BUT make sure that our baby is never in direct sunlight and is kept out of draughts etc. We would recommend an indoor shoot!
Set Up a Cosy Space
Create a cosy and safe area for your baby to be photographed. A soft blanket, a comfortable cushion, and some props like cute baby hats, stuffed animals, or a swaddle can add feeling to your photos.
Keep It Warm
Newborns love warmth, so make sure the room is comfortably heated. A warm baby is a happy, sleepy baby, and that’s what you want for those adorable shots.
Be Patient
Newborn photoshoots require patience. Babies have their own schedules, and they might need breaks for feeding, changing, or just some cuddles. Don’t rush; take your time.
Capture Details
Newborns grow so fast, and it’s the tiny details that often fade away quickly. Capture close-up shots of those tiny hands, feet, and those adorable facial expressions.
Safety First
If you’re trying any intricate poses or props, ensure they are safe and secure. Always have a ‘spotter’ or someone to assist you during the shoot to make sure your baby is safe at all times.
Embrace Candid Moments
Some of the most heartwarming photos happen when you capture those candid moments—a yawn, a stretch, or a cute sneeze. Keep your camera ready for these spontaneous shots.
Experiment with Angles
Don’t be afraid to get creative with your angles. Try shooting from above, from the side, or even at baby’s eye level. Experimentation can lead to some truly unique shots.
Post-Processing
After the shoot, you can use photo editing software to enhance your images further. Adjust lighting, contrast, and colours to bring out the best in your photos. A lot of this can be done on your smartphone.
Share the Joy
Once you’ve edited your photos to perfection, don’t forget to share them with friends and family. They’ll love seeing these precious moments and may even want to get copies themselves to cherish.
Remember, the most important thing during a newborn photoshoot is to relax, enjoy the process, and let your baby’s natural beauty shine through. These photos will become cherished memories that you’ll treasure for a lifetime, capturing the love and joy of those early days with your newborn. Happy photographing! ??
