Let’s take a closer look at the individual components of Mojito cocktails. To achieve the desired sweetness, begin with a premium white rum such as Trois Rivières White Rum. Freshly squeezed lime juice adds a welcome tang to any cocktail. If you’re going to use mint, we recommend making sure that it is nice and fresh.
The traditional Mojito recipe
Let’s skip the chit-chat and get down to the serious business of making a Mojito. You can make cocktails with just a jug or shaker and a rolling pin or pestle instead of an expensive cocktail kit. Then, get a highball glass and some ice ready for serving.
Which is the best rum for making Mojitos?
White rum, not dark rum, that has been matured in charred oak barrels after distillation is called for in a traditional Mojito recipe. White rum retains its clarity thanks to being either not aged at all or only lightly matured in stainless steel barrels. The honey and spice notes of a Trois Rivières White Rum are among our favourites but most white rums will work well.
When it comes to Mojitos, what’s the ideal way to mix one?
The distinction between a good Mojito and a terrific Mojito is well-known. Read on for some expert advice on how to serve like a pro every time:
Never becoming stale
For the best taste, always use freshly squeezed lime juice. Simply put, bottled juice can never measure up to freshly squeezed.
Remove the dirt from your mint
Since mint is frequently grown in sandy soil, it must be carefully cleaned before being used in a muddle.
Muddle correctly
Crush the cleaned mint with the end of a wooden rolling pin, wooden spoon, or pestle. Add it to the bottom of your shaker or jar along with the sugar and lime juice. There should be some crunch from the sugar crystals.
For more of a kick, combine some mint leaves with the juice of a full lime if you share our fondness for a cocktail with a bit of zing!
Presentation is everything!
Before serving, give the mint leaves a light rub to release their oils and enhance the drink’s aroma.
An easy party Mojito recipe
Is it your goal to impress a large group of people with simple cocktails? Don’t worry about it. Cocktails like a Mojito, which can be served in large quantities and remain refreshingly cool, are a necessity for any outdoor gathering. Use sugar syrup in place of regular sugar when making a large batch of Mojitos to share with friends. If you want to save time, you may either buy sugar syrup or follow our simple instructions for making your own. You can simply infuse mint into sugar syrup. Simmer it for three minutes with roughly chopped mint, then straining the mixture once it has cooled. This can be prepared up to three days ahead of time and stored in the fridge.
Multiply our recipe eight times if you’re using a jug that holds the standard 1 3/4 litres (holding fire on the soda water and ice for now). Just before serving, give everything a good stir, fill the glass with ice, and top it up with soda water.
A Twist on the traditional Mojito
The Virgin Mojito is the perfect drink to whip up for friends avoiding alcohol for whatever reason. It’s a great substitute for traditional lemonade.
Due to the widespread love of Margaritas, the next logical variation would be a Tequila Mojito. Here you will find Tequila is substituted for rum. If you want more of a kick, chop up some jalapeno and add it in!
Don’t like rum? Use your favourite vodka or gin for a more neutral base in your Mojito. The botanicals in gin will complement the floral mintiness of the original recipe. Vodka will offer you a more neutral taste that is closer to the original.
As long as we’re talking gin, why not add a little sweetness to your Wimbledon-inspired summer drinks? Just muddle some chopped strawberry with the mint?
Watermelon and mango are also delicious when mushed and added to a Mojito.
To really get into the spirit of the islands, mix up a Coconut Mojito. If you’re in the mood for something decadent, try a coconut-flavoured rum mixed with some coconut cream.
Mojitos are popular throughout the year; it’s not just a summer drink! Whether it’s a Virgin Mojito or a full blown rum Mojito, it’s certainly a favourite amongst the Parenting Expert Team members!
