Get your little ones involved
This is a simple chocolate chip cookie recipe for kids. As with all baking, kids can help to measure and mix the ingredients for the cookie dough. Your little ones will love shaping or using a cutter to form the perfect cookies! It’s super easy!
How long will my cookies keep for?
I’m sure you won’t really need to know this because they will be gone in a flash, but they will keep in an airtight container for around 3-5 days. Cookies are also freezable, either before or after baking. Wrap them in cling film and pop them in a freezer bag. They will keep in the freezer for 3 months.
Equipment
- Digital weighing scales
- Freestanding or hand mixer
- Mixing bowl
- Measuring spoons
- Baking tray
- Wire rack for cooling
Time: 30 minutes to prepare and 10 to 12 minutes to bake.
Serves: Approx 16 cookies.
Ingredients
- 100g of softened butter, not too soft
- 150g brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 200g self raising flour
- 100g chocolate chips
Method
- Preheat your oven to 180C Fan / 330F and line two or three baking trays with non-stick baking paper.
- Your kids can do the measuring. Measure the butter and sugar out and add them to a mixing bowl or freestanding mixer. If your butter isn’t soft just pop it in the microwave for 10 seconds or so to soften it. Don’t melt it!
- Mix the butter and sugar together in your mixer or a hand held mixer (or even a wooden spoon) until the sugar and butter are light and fluffy.
- If you dare, let your kids break the egg into a small bowl. You could always break it into a separate bowl just in case any shell goes in. A simple way to get shell out, use a large piece of shell to scoop it out rather than your finger.
- Add the vanilla extract.
- Mix the egg and vanilla into your butter and sugar mix.
- Measure the flour and add it to the mixing bowl. Slowly mix it in until it all comes together in a nice cookie dough. If you need to, use a spatula to scrape the mixture down from the sides of the bowl.
- Finally, get your kids to add the chocolate chips to your dough mixture. Just pour them straight in then mix them in with a spatula or wooden spoon until they are well distributed well in your cookie dough.
The fun part!
- Using a spoon, add evenly sized dollops of dough mixture to each of your baking trays. These cookies spread while baking so leave lots of space between each cookie as possible. Make all the dollops of cookie dough roughly the same size so they bake evenly. Try to aim for around 16 portions unless you want giant cookies. If you are baking larger cookies they may need longer in the oven.
- If you’d like to shape your cookies, roll them with a lightly floured rolling pin on a lightly floured surface and cut using your chosen cookie cutter. These can make ideal Christmas cookies with a festive cookie cutter shape.
- Put the baking trays in the fridge to chill for around 15 minutes before putting them in the oven.
On your marks, get set… BAKE!
- Bake the cookies in the oven for 10-12 minutes. When the edges have just started to turn golden brown and they’ve flattened down, the cookies are ready.
- Leave them on the baking trays to cool slightly for a while, then move them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, unless you like warm cookies they are ready to enjoy!
Why are my cookies too flat?
You should also always put your cookies into the fridge to chill for 20 to 25 minutes before you bake them. This should stop your cookies from spreading too much and becoming flat in the oven.
