A good skincare routine is important and It’s always nice to have a little pampering time. We all need it whether pregnant or not. However, do you know exactly what you are putting onto your skin? The Parenting Expert looks at some of the best organic skincare products on the market and what organic actually means.
Skin is the largest organ of the body and everything you put on your face, hair and body is absorbed into your bloodstream. Of course all hair and skincare products which are readily available are tested, but is going natural going to be kinder to your body?
On average during our regular hygiene routine we put around 170 chemicals onto our skin and hair. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you may want to consider going organic.
What does organic mean?
For a product to be certified as organic it needs to be made up of at least 95% organically grown produce. To claim that it has been made with organic ingredients it must contain over 70% organic produce.
It is illegal for brands to claim their products are organic unless they have been certified. Look for certification from an association or federation to confirm that they are in actual fact certified organic.
Always check the shelf life of organic products too. As they are made up from more natural ingredients, the shelf life may be shorter than a regular product. The packaging may contain an icon with a pot and the time in months the product has to be used by once opened, or it may have a use by date.
Benefits of Organic Skincare
While organic skincare products eliminate chemicals which can be absorbed into your bloodstream or passed on to your baby if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, there is no proof to say that these products are any better than regular skincare products.
Despite this, organic skincare is one of the fastest growing sectors of the beauty industry. (Research taken from the British Skin Foundation). I personally think there is something more comforting about using natural products on my skin, whether that be psychological, it just feels more nourishing and less synthetic.
Packaging
A lot of organic skincare products are packaged in compostable and/or recycled packaging, from the bottles to the boxes they come in. This also helps with the impact on the environment!
Cruelty Free
Whether you are a meat eater, vegetarian or vegan, purchasing your hygiene products which are not tested on animals is important. Always look for the cruelty free logo on the packaging.
