Tried and Tested : The Best Sun Cream 2023

July 29, 2023

The warm embrace of the sun is undoubtedly one of life’s simple pleasures, but amidst the joys of basking in its glow, it is essential to remember the potential dangers it poses to our skin. As we spend time outdoors, whether it’s at the beach, hiking, or simply running errands, protecting our skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays using a sun cream should be a top priority. We often think about our children’s skin during the warmer months, but what about ours?

Sun cream is the cornerstone of any effective sun protection routine. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30, which shields the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sun cream generously to all exposed areas about 15 to 30 minutes before heading outside, and reapply every two hours or more frequently if you’ve been swimming or sweating.

Here are the best sun creams, tried and tested by Parenting Expert, to help safeguard your skin and maintain its radiant health.

Best High Factor Sun Cream

Cellular Protection Sunscreen SPF50 from The Organic Pharmacy – RRP £39.99 (100ml)

Out of all the sun creams we tested we loved the Cellular Protection Sunscreen from The Organic Pharmacy. Made in London (we love the fact that it does not have a large environmental footprint to get into our hands), it contains Rose Hip, Calendula and Shea Butter. We found that it rubbed in really easily and smelt divine!

Best Anti-Ageing Sun Cream

Organii Everyday Organics SPF15 – RRP £16.95 (50ml)

This medium protection formula is suitable for all skin types and is specially formulated for your face. After a few days of use, we certainly found it to be moisturising and nourishing for your skin – it was left feeling silky soft. It did take a while to rub in, but once rubbed in it was easy to apply make-up on top if required.

Best Facial Sun Cream

EVOLVE Organic Beauty Climate Defence – RRP £24.65 (40ml)

We love all of the EVOLVE Organic Beauty Skincare range. This new Climate Defence Facial Cream with SPF 30 is just as beautiful as all their other skincare range, it goes on the face smoothly, is hydrating and smells delightful too! It leaves your face feeling firmer and plumper, and it locks moisture into the skin. Make up goes on well over the top of this sun cream too! We love the fact that EVOLVE Organic Beauty use 100% renewable energy in their eco studio in Hertfordshire, have been accredited Plastic Negative by rePurpose Global and are working towards both zero waste and net zero goals.

Best Natural Sun Cream

Odylique Natural Sun Cream SPF15 – RRP £25 (100ml)

For many of us, ensuring that what we use as part of our daily skin care routine is based on natural ingredients is an option we won’t compromise on. The Oblique Natural Sun Cream came out as our firm favourite for a number of reasons – including the fact that the amber jar and aluminium lid are completely recyclable. Our tester naturally has quite ‘flushed’ skin and found the chamomile in this product to be particularly calming. She rated it as the best sun cream she had ever used.

Best Water Resistant Sun Cream

Forever Aloe Sun Cream – RRP £20.68 (118ml)

We tried a number of water resistant sun creams, and our team voted Forever Aloe to be the best. It rubbed in easily (we found some of the water resistant ones a little sticky) and lasted for 80 mins. We also tested this whilst running in the heat, and our tester found it to work better than other brands she has used in the past, despite professing to be rather sweaty after a run!

As well as regularly reapplying sun cream, there are a number of other things you should do to keep your skin healthy. These include :-

Seeking shade during peak hours

The sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, limit your time outdoors during these peak hours, and seek shaded areas when you are out and about. Not only will this provide relief from the heat, but it will also reduce your skin’s exposure to harmful UV radiation.

Wear protective clothing

Clothing can be an excellent defence against the sun’s rays. Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting, and tightly woven fabrics that cover as much skin as possible. Wide-brimmed hats offer additional protection for your face, neck, and ears, while UV-blocking sunglasses safeguard your eyes and the sensitive skin around them.

Don’t Forget Your Lips and Ears!

The skin on your lips and ears is delicate and often overlooked when it comes to sun protection. Be sure to apply a lip balm with SPF to keep your lips hydrated and shielded from the sun’s rays. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat will also help protect your ears from sunburn.

Hydrate, Inside and Out

Sun exposure can dehydrate your skin, making it crucial to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Additionally, using a moisturiser after sun exposure can help replenish lost moisture and soothe sun-exposed skin.

Be Cautious in Water and Snow

Water and snow can intensify the sun’s rays due to their reflective properties. If you’re swimming or engaging in winter activities, take extra precautions by applying waterproof sun cream and wearing appropriate protective gear.

Regular Skin Checkups

Stay vigilant about changes in your skin, such as new moles, growths, or changes in existing moles. If you notice anything unusual, consult a dermatologist promptly to rule out any potential skin concerns.

Remember, sun protection isn’t just a seasonal concern. UV rays can still be harmful on cloudy days or during colder months. Making sun protection a part of your daily routine will go a long way toward maintaining healthy and vibrant skin. So, whether you’re enjoying a sunny holiday or going about your daily errands, prioritise your skin’s well-being and safeguard it from the sun’s powerful rays. A little preparation and precaution now will pay off with healthier, glowing skin for years to come.
