The ADAC Infant Carrier results 2024 are out and the infant carrier that came top in class may be from a brand you have not heard of…yet!
You may know Thule for their roof bars or even their all terrain pushchairs. However the Thule family is growing and next month (November 2024) they are adding car seats into their range. Car seat safety is the primary factor when launching a car seat. Getting through the stringent testing of ADAC, an independent testing body, is an accolade all brands aspire to. Car seat experts and parents around the world look to ADAC to ensure that car seats meet the standards we expect for our children. ADAC tested 9 infant carriers in the 2024 testing and they have just released the results.
What are the ADAC criteria for testing?
Safety
The safety of each child seat is tested in frontal and side impact crashes . The simulated accident even goes beyond the legal requirements for a child seat. This category accounts for 50 percent of the ADAC verdict.
Service
The operation is also tested, because only a correctly installed seat can protect the child well in the event of an accident. It is important that the child seat can be installed intuitively and correctly and that the number of installation steps is as small as possible. The share of the overall rating here is 40 percent .
Ergonomics
The ergonomics of each tested seat are also taken into account, because only in a suitable child seat can the child sit comfortably, relaxed and safely, and the belts and side bolsters can develop their full protective effect . The ergonomics test criterion includes not only the seating position, the space available and the comfort for the child. It also the space required by the child seat in the vehicle. This category accounts for 10 percent of the ADAC verdict.
Pollutants
The ADAC checks for possible harmful substances using a mixed sample of all textile parts of the child seat that the child comes into contact with. This mixed sample is tested for the content of chemical substances such as PAHs, phthalates, flame retardants, plasticisers, phenolic compounds, organotin, formaldehyde, heavy metals and chlorinated paraffins. If the evaluation of the harmful substance content is worse than “satisfactory”, this leads to a serious downgrade in the overall rating.
