Tired and Puffy Eyes – You Must Be a Mum!

June 28, 2023

New motherhood is an incredibly rewarding journey, but it can also leave you feeling exhausted with tired and puffy eyes. Lack of sleep and the demands of caring for a newborn can take a toll on your appearance. Thankfully, there are products specifically designed to target tired and puffy eyes, helping you look and feel refreshed.

Over the last few months, the team at Parenting Expert has been testing a variety of products that are supposedly supposed to get rid of those bags under your eyes. We have pulled together our favourite products! Here are some of the best products for new mums to combat those pesky under-eye concerns:

Eye Masks

Eye masks or gel patches are a popular choice for soothing tired eyes. These masks are infused with ingredients like cucumber extract or aloe vera, which provide a cooling sensation and help reduce puffiness. Simply place the mask over your eyes and let the soothing properties work their magic.

Parenting Expert loves… We loved the eye mask contained in the Starskin Relax Masking Set. It really did take the puffiness out of the tester’s eyes, who described it as ‘a moment of indulgence after so little sleep with a newborn. This mask worked wonders in such a short period of time!’

Parenting Expert loves… We also felt we had to mention the Beauty Pro RETINAL Under Eye Mask Patch as our tester raved about these. “I have never really used an eye mask before, and I didn’t think it would make a difference in all honesty. I had a pack of three and used them three days in a row, having had a run of particularly sleepless nights due to my poorly son. By day three, there was a noticeable difference, and even my partner commented about this, and he never passes compliments! I am certainly going to be buying these again and think they make an ideal gift for a new mum!”

Eye Rollers

Eye rollers are convenient and easy-to-use tools that can provide instant relief for tired eyes. These rollers often contain a combination of cooling ingredients and massaging beads that help reduce puffiness and stimulate blood circulation. Roll the product gently under your eyes for a refreshing and revitalising effect.

Parenting Expert loves… SkinBetter Science Instant Effect Eye Gel is a game-changer for tired eyes according to our tester. “It delivered immediate results, reducing puffiness and smoothing fine lines. A must-have for a refreshed look.”

Cold Compresses

Sometimes, a simple cold compress can do wonders for puffy eyes. You can use a washcloth soaked in cold water or even chilled spoons. Apply the compress gently to your eyes for a few minutes to help constrict blood vessels and reduce swelling.

Eye Serums

Eye serums are lightweight, fast-absorbing formulations that target specific eye concerns. Look for serums that contain ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, or peptides, which can help improve the appearance of puffiness and brighten the under-eye area. Apply a small amount of serum to your fingertips and gently pat it around the eyes.

Parenting Expert Loves… We tested the Luna Goddess Night Serum and our tester was very impressed – she told us ‘this serum was light-weight and really did work. I used it regularly and the results were great. I absolutely loved the smell of it and it has become part of my daily routine now’.

Eye Drops

Eye drops can be a lifesaver for new mums experiencing tired, dry, and irritated eyes. Look for lubricating eye drops specifically formulated for dryness and fatigue. Drops provide instant relief by hydrating and soothing the eyes, reducing redness and discomfort. Regular use of eye drops can help refresh tired eyes, improve moisture levels, and restore a more vibrant and awake appearance. Remember to consult with your healthcare provider before using any eye drops, especially if you are breastfeeding.

Parenting Expert loves…TheraTears Eye Drops are a reliable solution for tired and dry eyes. “They provide long-lasting relief, far longer than I anticipated” reports our tester, Mum of a newborn and a toddler. “They instantly soothed irritation and made my eyes feel refreshed and comfortable.”

Toners

Toner gel is a versatile skincare product that can also help in reducing the appearance of bags under the eyes. Its lightweight and cooling formula can provide a refreshing sensation to the delicate under-eye area. Toner gel contains hydrating and soothing ingredients that help to reduce puffiness and promote skin elasticity. When applied gently around the eyes, the toner gel can help tighten the skin and diminish the appearance of bags, giving a more rejuvenated and refreshed look. Regular use of toner gel as part of your skincare routine can contribute to a smoother and more revitalised under-eye area, helping you achieve a more youthful and rested appearance.

Parenting Expert Loves… Dr. Jackson’s Face and Eye Essence came out on top for the Parenting Expert team. Our tester was a little nervous to test this product as she has very sensitive skin. However, she reported back that Dr. Jackson’s was easy to apply and worked really well for my ultra sensitive skin. The smell was amazing, and I am sure that the aroma helped as much as the actual toner. The toner was not heavy on my skin, and after a week, I started seeing a big difference. After 3 weeks, it was really noticeable and this is now part of my must-do daily routine.”

Room and Pillow Sprays

Room and pillow sprays have gained popularity as aids for better sleep and relaxation which in turn will help to elevate bags under eyes. These sprays are specially formulated with soothing scents and essential oils that promote a calm and tranquil environment. When sprayed in the room or on the pillow, the gentle fragrance helps create a peaceful ambiance, easing stress and anxiety. The pleasant aroma of lavender, chamomile, or other sleep-inducing scents can help signal the brain and body that it’s time to unwind and prepare for restful sleep.

Parenting Expert Loves… Aroma Energy Sleep Pillow Spray came out as our favourite and for £4.99 we think that this option is a cost-effective and fabulous way to induce relaxation and hopefully deep sleep. Our tester loved the fragrance and said it ‘certainly aided sleep for both me and my husband. Having a baby and a toddler means that any sleep needs to be a deep sleep and I am sure that this spray helped.”

Makeup Concealers

When all else fails, a good quality concealer can be a new mum’s best friend. Choose a concealer that matches your skin tone and has a lightweight, buildable formula. Look for products that offer good coverage without settling into fine lines or creasing. Gently pat the concealer onto the under-eye area to brighten and camouflage any signs of tiredness.

Parenting Expert Loves… Hydrosil’s Dry Eye Concealer was our favourite and worked its magic in seconds. It was easy to apply and blended with various skin tones. It was a simple, quick-fix solution, and our tester described it as “a light and non-greasy solution that worked well under make-up or without because, let’s face it, busy Mums don’t always have time to apply lots of make-up in the morning”.

Remember, while these products can provide temporary relief, it’s important to address the root causes of tired and puffy eyes, such as getting enough rest, staying hydrated, and managing stress. Incorporate self-care practices into your routine, prioritise sleep whenever possible, and seek support from loved ones to help you navigate the challenges of new motherhood. Embrace this beautiful phase of life and take care of yourself, both inside and out.
