Tried and Tested : Newborn Essentials 2024

January 5, 2024

Congratulations! You’re about to embark on the incredible journey of parenthood, and amidst the whirlwind of emotions, one critical task looms: building your newborn’s nest. Choosing the right newborn essentials can feel overwhelming, with aisles upon aisles of tempting options. But fear not, new parents! This guide will help you navigate the essential items, ensuring your little one starts life comfortably and securely. We have picked some of our favourite products currently on the market, all thoroughly tried and tested by the expert team at Parenting Expert.

Pushchair

A pushchair is considered a newborn essential for almost all parents, unless you decide to purely baby-carry. There are so many on the market, and it can be very daunting to pick something that suits you, your lifestyle, and, of course, your budget.

The Babystyle Oyster 3 is one of the most popular options currently available in the UK. This versatile system consists of a spacious pram, which converts into a lightweight pushchair using a separate seat unit. Most will buy one of the great-value bundles, rather than just the pushchair on its own. The Oyster’s smooth manoeuvrability and compact fold make it ideal for urban adventures, while the included accessories like a rain cover and cosy footmuff ensure comfort in any weather.

Car Seat

Another newborn essential for most parents is a car seat. You cannot legally travel in a car without one, except in a taxi (however, we would always recommend that you still use a car seat in any taxi!). Like pushchairs, there are many on the market that vary in both safety rating and cost.

The Cybex Cloud T i-Size Infant Carrier, although not the cheapest option, is very popular. This ergonomic carrier offers superior comfort and safety for both parent and baby. Its adjustable features ensure a perfect fit, while the breathable materials and comfortable straps make even long journeys a breeze. The ability to lie this flat on the pushchair chassis is a big bonus for many parents. If you are going to use it on the chassis of your pushchair, always ensure that it is compatible and has been safety tested.

Bouncer

A bouncer provides parents with an ‘extra pair of hands’ when they need it most. Whether you need somewhere safe to pop a baby while you have a shower or make a much-needed cup of tea, a bouncer is a must-have for many parents.

The Ergobaby Evolve Bouncer is a luxurious and safe option that recently gained 10/10 stars in our independent review. This innovative 3-in-1 wonder transforms from a cosy and supportive newborn lounger to a playful infant bouncer and finally a sturdy toddler chair. Its ergonomic design supports a baby’s development, while the gentle rocking motion soothes and entertains. Read our full review here.

Highchair

Although many people won’t think about buying a highchair until their baby reaches weaning age, around 6 months, there are from-birth options. There are many benefits to the from-birth option, primarily ensuring that when you have a meal, you can have your newborn at eye-level and they can be part of family mealtimes from a very early age.

The Tutti Bambini Nova is a sleek and stylish highchair that boasts a clever grow-with-me design, adapting from a newborn highchair to a toddler seat to a dining chair for an older child. Its soft padding and adjustable features guarantee maximum comfort, while the stylish design seamlessly blends into any dining space.

Bedside Crib

The recommendation is that your baby sleep in your room until they are 6 months old (see Lullaby Trust advice here). A bedside crib will last longer than your traditional Moses basket.

The Snuzpod4 Bedside Crib is a popular, newborn essential option for parents. It is spacious, easy to use, and, most importantly, comfortable for your baby. The side can be zipped down while the crib is attached to your bed to give you full visibility of your (hopefully) sleeping babe. We love the sleek design and the fact that it is available in such a wide range of finishes—something to suit all interiors and tastes.

Baby Carrier

We highly recommend a baby carrier or wrap suitable for a newborn. These can be an absolute godsend. Many babies want to be held and rocked (and that is ok!). A carrier means you can hold and rock your baby but your hands are still free to get on with ‘jobs’ around the house. Once you master your carrier or wrap, you may find that you ditch your bulk pram for short trips to the shops.

The Ergobaby Embrace Newborn Carrier is an easy option for parents put off by the apparent complicated tying of a wrap. The quality is superb and it is easy to adapt to the different sizes of parents or caregivers.

Everything Else….

Remember, every family is unique, and your essential list may differ from other people’s. Factor in your lifestyle, budget, and personal preferences when making your choices.

Shopping Tip: Don’t forget the little things! Soft bibs, cuddly blankets, and engaging toys will add a touch of magic to your baby’s world.  Your list ‘could’ be endless but remember that shops are open 7 days a week nowadays so don’t panic if you forget anything.

The arrival of a newborn is a momentous occasion. By carefully selecting the right baby products, you can create a safe and nurturing environment that fosters your little one’s growth and development. So, explore your options, consider comfort and safety, and most importantly, embrace the adventure of building your baby’s perfect nest!
