Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned runner, having the right running gear can make a big difference in your performance and enjoyment of the sport. But with so many different products on the market, it can be tough to know which ones are worth the investment.
That’s where the team at Parenting Expert comes in. We’ve tested out a wide range of running products, from shoes and socks to clothing and accessories, to find the best of the best.
Here are our top picks for running products that have been tried and tested:
Shoes
The right pair of running shoes are essential for comfort and support.
Brooks Ghost 15 Road Running Trainers
RRP £135
We absolutely love these road-running shoes. They are great value for money, well made, and very comfortable. Over the last month, they have run countless miles around the Lincolnshire Wolds, as well as numerous tennis matches. Our tester described them as being true to size and one of the most comfortable running trainers she has ever owned. They are available in a wide range of colours, meaning that there is something to suit everyone. These make a great pair of running trainers for someone who wants something light-weight. At £135, they are not as expensive as some, so they make a great option for someone starting on their running journey.
Socks
Running socks can help to prevent blisters and wick away moisture. Looking after your feet is perhaps the most important element for any serious runner!
Enertor Energy Run Socks
RRP £13.99
Enertor Energy Running Socks are designed to provide comfort, support and blister prevention for runners of all levels. Our tester said that initially, they were concerned that they were thinner than some of her other running socks. However, these were very comfortable, and she reported back, NO BLISTERS despite being prone to blisters in the past. She was very impressed and has since bought more pairs for herself and her running partner!
Clothing
Running clothing should be breathable and moisture-wicking. We are also aware that runners also want to look their best—there is a real fashion sense for many runners who want to have practical clothing but do not want to compromise on style.
PUMA X Modibodi 7/8 Active Leggings
RRP £46.50
PUMA and Modibodi have teamed together to produce a range of products designed for runners (and women playing other sports) whilst on their period. We tested out the PUMA x Modibodi 7/8 Active Leggings. Our tester was keen to try these out, and here are her thoughts. She reported that she had high hopes when these arrived for testing. It’s about time that manufacturers came up with a solution for those of us who have heavy periods but still want to exercise. Personally, she had avoided wearing leggings when on her period as she either didn’t entirely trust a tampon or she hated the unsightly ‘bulge’ of a towel! The PUMA x Modibodi leggings have revolutionised the way she exercises, which is largely road running. They definitely got the thumbs up!
REFLECT360 Short Sleeve Top
RRP £34.99
REFLECT360 Short Sleeve Top is available for both men and women. We enlisted the support of a seasoned runner to test this product. He runs three times a week without fail, so he really put this top through it’s paces. Our tester reported back that, despite regular use and inevitable washing, the top maintained both it’s colour and shape. He liked the multiple reflective strips on the top, especially now that the evenings are drawing in. Our reviewer told us he is going to buy the long-sleeved version for the winter months, rather than his usual brand of running top.
REFLECT360 Reflective Women’s Long Sleeve Training Top
RRP £44.99
This top is available in a variety of colours, and we were sent the stunning Ocean Teal to review. This was a real hit with our tester. She reported back that she absolutely loved the colour—so nice to have something different from black, grey, or neon! She used this twice a week and reported that it was excellent quality and nicely finished. Our tester loved the fit of the top, and despite some very sweaty runs, it wicked moisture away from her skin. She praised the fact that it dried so quickly after washing.
Boobydoo Shock Absorber Padded Run Bra
RRP £52.00
A good bra for running, or any sport, is important—a fact that many women will agree with. However, finding one can be more challenging. This is where Boobydoo comes in—an online retailer that specialises in sports bra fitting! Our reviewer was sent the Champion Shock Absorber Padded Run Bra, and this was tested for over a month. She reported back that it was very, very comfortable and gave her the support that she required when running and playing racket sports. Her only niggle was that it was quite difficult to do up at the back and took a bit of getting used to (or a partner to help her initially!). However, she did say that this really wouldn’t put her off buying this sports bra due to how comfortable it was and the amount of support it gave her.
Accessories
Running accessories can help you stay safe and hydrated on your runs. There are lots of running accessories available, but we think we have found some must-haves for both avid runners as well as those who run occasionally.
REFLECT360 Fully Reflective Running Cap
RRP £29.99
We were sent the REFLECT360 reflective hat to test. This is adjustable and suitable for both men and women. The hat was tested by a running couple, and they reported back that it fitted both of them perfectly. In fact, they are going to buy a second one, as they loved it so much. Our testers reported that the fully reflective hat added reassurance when running at night. No need to worry about batteries running out on their running belts! They both reported that it was comfortable and stayed in place throughout their runs—both road running and trail running.
Panda Optics Conquer Sunglasses
RRP £79
There are sunglasses, and their are sunglasses when it comes to running. Our tester had been through quite a few pairs—some hadn’t really shaded her eyes while running in full sunshine. Others had slipped down her nose as she ran. The Panda Optic Conquer glasses are one of their best sellers for a multitude of sports, including running. They come with three (yes three) different lenses: mirrored, amber, and clear. Our tester was particularly impressed that you got three pairs of glasses for the price of one (with the different lenses). She reported back that they were comfortable and stayed put while running. She told us that they were particularly comfortable over her ears and that she has no hesitation in recommending them to runners.
Bodylite NightVision Belt
RRP £17.00
The NightVision Belt isn’t just a fancy accessory. It’s a safety essential for anyone taking part in any outside activity in the dark, including running. The belt is reflective, but you do have the option to add a light (RRP £34.40) for added visibility. Our tester reported that this was very lightweight and comfortable to wear. The belt was effective, and his running colleagues commented on how bright and reflective it was compared to others that people were wearing.
BetterYou Magnesium Muscle Body Spray
RRP £13.99
When it comes to running gear, you often just think of clothing and accessories. However, magnesium spray is designed to soothe muscles that have been working hard. Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant. It is known to stimulate blood flow to support muscle recovery. Our tester is now a convert and told us it was like ‘magic in a spray bottle’! She used this after both road running and trail running and could feel a considerable difference between the times she used it and those she didn’t.
Stroller
If you are running with a little one, you might decide that you need a running stroller. Read our in-depth article about what to look for in a running stroller here.
