Why Are Cot Bumpers Dangerous?

April 5, 2023

Parenting Expert explores the question; Why are cot bumpers dangerous?

Cot bumpers are padding that are attached to the sides of a baby’s cot or crib, with the aim of preventing your baby from hitting their head on the hard sides of the cot or getting their arms or legs caught in the slats. We understand that they look pretty and you can get beautiful pictures of your nursery for Instagram. However, cot bumpers have been linked to an increased risk of suffocation, strangulation, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It’s just not worth the risk!

Here are some reasons why cot bumpers can be dangerous:
Suffocation

Cot bumpers can pose a suffocation risk if your baby’s face becomes trapped against the bumper. This can prevent them from breathing properly and potentially suffocating.

Strangulation

Cot bumpers that have long ties to fasten them to the sides of the cot, these can pose a strangulation risk if your baby becomes entangled in them.

Overheating

Cot bumpers can increase the risk of overheating. We all want to make sure our baby is warm enough, however they still need good air circulation. Bumpers can restrict air circulation in the cot and around your baby.

Impact

Cot bumpers can pose a risk of injury. Once your baby gets stronger and is pulling them up on the sides of the cot they can potentially use the cot bumper for leverage to climb out of the cot.

Increased risk of SIDS

Cot bumpers have been linked to an increased risk of SIDS, as they can restrict air flow and increase the risk of overheating. For these reasons, many safety organisations such as the NHS in the UK and The Lullaby Trust recommend against the use of cot bumpers. Instead, it is recommended to use a firm, flat mattress with a fitted sheet. Ensure that the baby’s sleeping environment is free from soft objects such as blankets, pillows, and soft toys.

Remember, a safe cot is an empty cot!
